The Great Northern Illuminated Mallard is a playful marriage of high end materials and low brow humor, juxtaposing the preciousness of the hand-built glazed porcelain body with a cheap novelty duck bill. The lamp highlights the differences between the two, while also showing they can come together in a fun and cohesive way.
Utilizing ready-made objects as raw materials/components alongside more traditional ones has become a sign of the 21st century and the consumer landscape we live in, where the costs to make simple parts yourself can be much higher than clicking and buying them online. The Mallard tries to embrace this change in the creative landscape, without sacrificing the end aesthetic goal.
